Scientific and technical knowledge of sugarcane cover-management USLE/RUSLE factor

ABSTRACT: Sugarcane covers 10.6 Mha of Brazilian agricultural land (13 % all cropland), mainly in the south-central region. In tropical climate conditions, physiological characteristics sugarcane allow a wide range management systems with contrasting soil erosion outcomes. Models can assess these differences and Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) based models are most frequently used. The cover-management factor (C Factor) is USLE input variable that represents changes cover management. We collected, compared, evaluated C Factor values reported technical scientific literature to support modelers scientists on adequate choice values. analyzed references reporting primary sources applied or described them. found 50 references, showing value variation ranging from 0.0012 0.5800. Thirteen were sources. seven for growing but only two papers peer-reviewed. used poor understanding description methodological geographical origin out context specific crop application. Therefore, results may not be compatible study site conditions. lack clarity site–specific environmental conditions which Factors obtained, hindering use specificities by end user.
